If the Church/State relationship is usually characterized in Cuba by alternate phases of gained and lost religious influence over politics, the revolutionary period is marked by confrontation. Nevertheless, after two decades of silence, Cuban Catholics have tried to change their role in the socialist society. Since the beginning of the 1990’s, the « para-political » function of the Church has been entrust to laics. The Cuban Church is indeed aware of its weak penetration of the Cuban -society and of the risks linked to religious competition. It therefore relies on its own capacity to keep its role and influence.
