Abstract
This study focuses on the publication of the Jewish prayerbook in the Italian version in 1802. This major event at the very beginning of the process of emancipation of the Jews of Italy is understood through the work as translator of Salomone Fiorentino (1743-1815), a Tuscan poet and a Jewish intellectual who developed a philosophical and civil lyricism halfway between tradition and modernity, between religion and science. The article addresses, in particular, his reflection around translation as a political and civil act, and prayer as the highest form of poetry.
