This article aims to present some linguistic beliefs from the “caipira” speakers’ dialect about their own speech. The analysis concerns judgments about the discontinuous features characteristic of rural speech, which suffer social stigma and deserve more attention for instance, to search for the origin of the “caipira” dialect This search would significantly contribute to the softening of the linguistic prejudice linked to this dialect, since many of its features are revealing of the influences of other languages in the process of Brazilian colonization. Consequently, from the theoretical assumptions about linguistic beliefs and attitudes, this type of linguistic practice is addressed by the informants participating in this study with the purpose of reflecting on such beliefs.
