If the few pages that Edward W. Said devotes to L’Immoraliste in Culture and Imperialism (1993) fully confirm the Western contempt that characterizes Orientalism, the novel published by Gide in 1902 takes place in a social and ideological context that can somewhat reduces the pressure on the representation of East. Next to the category of « race » considered by Edward W. Said, the categories of class and of gender must be taken into account if we want to understand the subtle aeæsthetic balance of the Gide’s novel and the complexity of human relationships which it includes.
