Demonstrating Team-Based Care in Primary Care Environments Via Video Modules and Discussion
Abstract
Abstract Although learners are told of the importance of teamwork in primary health care delivery, most do not see this modeled in their practice environments. In an effort to show learners a contrasting view of primary care “as usual” versus what primary care can look like when high-functioning health care teams work together in an integrated fashion, we created a set of videos. To accompany the videos, discussion questions to further delve into the concepts of team-based care and the roles of various team members were developed. Ultimately, the purpose of this educational module is to demonstrate to medical students what team-based care can look like in primary care, to facilitate a discussion regarding why team-based care is desired in current medical systems, and to allow the students to formulate strategies to collaborate efficiently in interprofessional teams. At the end of the session, all 25 students completed an evaluation and reflection. Judging from analysis of the personal reflection data, this activity was well received by the students and achieved the purpose of introducing and modeling team-based care. For example, on a 1-6 scale, the mean rating for “The session explained potential roles for nonphysician members of the health care team” was 5.20. Other objectives for the session were that students would “develop an appreciation of and respect for the contributors of the health care team,” “describe the leadership role of a physician in the team,” “list barriers in the current model of care,” and “develop a positive attitude toward patient-centered, collaborative care”; they achieved average ratings of 5.40, 5.36, 5.16, and 5.72, respectively. The last objective, “develop strategies/ideas for communicating and collaboration,” was rated lower than the others, with an average rating of 4.92. This identifies a potential area for improvement during subsequent sessions. Of all 175 responses to the evaluation questions, only five responses (2.9%) were rated ≤ 3 (out of 6). All 25 medical students also provided comments regarding the take-home message they received from this session. Ten of 25 students identified the theme of teamwork as their point to take home.
