Tamil people have a strong belief in God and worshipping God for many ages. The World’s most ancient Tamil treatise “Tolkappiyam” speaks about the tradition of worshipping each deity in Tamil Nadu. Saiva religion is an ancient one that was prevalent all over the Asian sub-continent. Saiva religion is present with special characteristics during the most ancient Vedic system of human history. In the Saivic cult, Naga (Snake) is one of the deities and has deep reverence from the people. Many temples were built to revere the Naga God. Many places were in the name of the term ‘Naga’. For ex Nagercoil, Nagapattinam, Nagalapuram, Nagampatti, Nagaland etc. These places have temples for the Naga God. Naganatha Swamy Temple is in Ambur, Tirupattur District, Tamil Nadu. The God Nagesvara and the importance of the temple have been described in this article.
