The study presents the earliest commentaries on Bolzano’s treatise On the Concept of the Beautiful. Commentaries that emerged before 1908 consist of internal reviews by Franz Exner and Josef Jungmann, a review by Franz Ficker and two texts by Robert Zimmermann. All interpretations were instrumental, focusing primarily not on Bolzano’s theory but on Austrian university policy, court plans for philosophical studies, requirements for the practical utility of aesthetics and the personal interests of the authors. A key aspect of Bolzano’s theory, the concept of rule, was only commented on by Zimmermann in Geschichte der Aesthetik als philosophischer Wissenschaft. He endeavoured, with its help, to establish the Herbartian aesthetic theory in the history of aesthetics as its scientific peak.
