Thermal Desulphurization of Syrian Petroleum Coke
Abstract
Thermal treatment of delayed petroleum coke at high temperatures can effectively reduce its sulphur content. The efficiency of the desulphurization is a factor of both maximum treatment temperature and residence time. Experimental work carried on extra high sulphur Syrian petroleum coke indicates that desulphurization can be achieved by means of thermal treatment at moderately high temperatures by increasing the residence time, avoiding thereby the adverse effects associated with thermal treatment at the higher temperatures deemed necessary for effective desulphurization. A maximum desulphurization of 90% was possible at a temperature of 1700 K and a residence time of 180 minutes. Keywords: Delayed petroleum coke, Thermal desulphurization
