The Controversy between Saint Jerome and Saint Augustine over the interpretation of the incident at Antioch which Saint Paul refers to in the Epistle to the Galatians (Ga 2, 11-16) is well-known, but it has not been considered in the light of the Vida de San Jerónimo (1595) where the Father Sigüenza develops each one’s arguments. A close analysis of this text shows that such an attempt at conciliation is typical of the thought of Counter-Reformation which tried to create unanimity between the Doctors and Fathers of the Church. For apologetical purposes, the hieronymite monk tries to reconcile, whith great rhetorical success, his preference for Saint Jerome and his reverence for Saint Augustine.
