Parotiditis associated with parainfluenza virus type 3 infection in an autologous stem cell transplantation patient.

Abstract

Parainfluenza virus (PIV) infections have been documented in 2 to 5% of patients undergoing hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The most common presentation are respiratory symptoms, which may be upper or lower. Non-respiratory involvement is rare, and includes myocarditis, meningitis and Guillain-Barré syndrome . We report a case of a patient who presented with parotid enlargement concomitant with respiratory symptoms after autologous HSCT for multiple myeloma. PIV-3 was isolated from a nasopharyngeal-throat wash during the episode. The diagnosis of parotiditis associated with PIV-3 was made and the patient was observed closely without specific antiviral treatment. A favorable outcome within days was observed.
