The aim of our research is to systematically analyze the implementation of regulatory and organizational measures in the Romanian education system and, implicitly, in the training of specialist gymnastics teachers (physical education) in schools, as well as in the promotion of physical activities (sports) practice across wider social categories, during modern times. While not claiming full completeness, and without losing sight of the most recent contributions on the topic, this study aims to bring into discussion both already known facts and a number of unpublished sources. The main points of interest of the present analysis consist in the initiatives and efforts made by important figures of the modern era – Gheorghe Moceanu, Spiru Haret, Vasile Negrutzi, Dimitrie Ionescu and others, which resulted in the establishment of schools designed specifically for the training of teachers, as well as in the elaboration of consistent methodologies for filling the gymnastics teachers positions.
