Experimental archaeology is taking on an ever more important role in pre- and early historical research. The archaeological open-air museum at the exhibition at the Museum of Pre- and Early History in Asparn/Zaya was a centre and teaching site for experimental archaeology from its beginnings in 1970. The experiments carried out in Asparn are mostly in the field of light industry. These include stone-, wood- and metal-processing, skin, textile, leather and pottery production, and bone working. Dye plants, the cultivation of ancient fruits of the field and also the preparation of various dishes are also offered. The open-air museum at Elsarn im Strassertal also increasingly hosts days of action led by Gerhard Putzgruber.
