Energy management strategies that ensure that energy supply and demand related policies and investment decisions consider all feasible demand- and supply-side options and are consistent with global goals for sustainable development are essential for achieving universal energy access. In this study, the Open Source Spatial Electrification Toolkit (OnSSET) is tested against the case study of Cameroon. The results show that achieving universal access to modern energy services in Cameroon requires prioritising investments in grid densification, extension, and modernisation, along with distribution systems. It is also found that mini grid PV systems can play a significant role in meeting Cameroon's electrification goals. The total cost of bringing electricity to the nearly 10 million Cameroonians who do not have access to it by 2035 is estimated to range between USD 7.8 billion and USD 10.44 billion.
