It is argued, that Neokantianism – often criticized polemically by Heidegger and his followers –, especially the Neokantianism of his teacher Heinrich Rickert, presents a more thorough theory concerning the fundaments of human understanding than Heidegger does. First, Heidegger is situated in his time, then principles of Rickerts theory on sense and values are sketched. Afterwards a basic problem of phenomenology in justifying principles is analysed; finally it turns out that validity – a fundamental notion of Neokantianism – functions implicitly as ground also for Heideggers ontological project, but Heidegger, for methodological reasons, fails to justify the use of this notion sufficiently.
