Purpose. To carry out a detailed comparative analysis of phraseological units with names of insects in the English and Russian languages in order to discover human qualities and characteristics marked by these units in English and Russian linguocultures. Relevance of the study. It helps reveal the differences and discrepancies in the visions of the world concerning meaningful human qualities and characteristics as presented in English and Russian linguocultures. Materials and methods. The main method of research is the comparative analysis of phraseological units combined with the component analysis of language units, namely names of insects in English and Russian. The conducted research is based on English and Russian thesauri, explanatory and phraseological dictionaries as well as precedent texts. Results. The performed analysis has yielded a list of human qualities and characteristics connected with appearances, character and behaviour, which are considered significant in a given linguoculture. Practical implications. The results of the study can contribute to compiling dictionary entries with names of insects in English and Russian thesauri, explanatory and phraseological dictionaries, both monolingual and bilingual. The research materials can also be used in designing the courses in phraseology, lexicology, linguaculturology and translation studies.
