The effect of the Danube river on groundwater quality in Apatin
Abstract
The area around the town of Apatin has in recent years often been mentioned in water resources development strategies as a prospective location for new water supply sources along the Danube River, which would be of potentially regional significance. The development concept aims to resolve drinking water quality issues in the northern part of the Bačka District, by improving groundwater quality through riverbank filtration. Over the past 13 years the Department of Hydrogeology/Faculty of Mining and Geology of the University of Belgrade has conducted extensive investigations at water supply sources of the town of Apatin and the Apatin Brewery, to collect information about the physical and chemical parameters of groundwater and compare them with the waters of the Danube, as the river plays an important role in aquifer recharge. Precipitation, river stages, river discharges, and certain components of the chemical compositions of the groundwater and surface water of the Danube were studied. The conclusions will contribute to future considerations of water supply issues in the study area.
