Among all the first city foundations in Mexico, only one, that of Puebla de Los Angeles, posed a specific political problem that led to strong opposition from Mexico’s neighbours to the creation of this city, the only Spanish-populated city created near the capital. Despite numerous advantages for New Spain, the foundation of this city was to be the beginning of a rivalry between the capital and the new born city, during the first decade until Mexico City, with its position as viceregal capital, acquired another role. This opposition is still little known (we have only a little information and documentation on the subject), so let us try to understand it.
