L’Église de Lyon en ses paroisses : catholicisme et espace urbain sous l’épiscopat du cardinal de Bonald
Abstract
The article examines the policy of parish creation under the episcopacy of Cardinal Bonald between 1839 and 1870 (18 parishes in 1839, 30 in 1870). It highlights the Catholic Church's capacity to respond, at least partially, to rapid urban growth with the support of the prefectoral administration and social elites, concerned to pacify the city. It also attempts to evaluate, in statistical terms, the disparities in clerical supervision between neighbourhoods. Then he took an example of the creation of a parish, that of the Immaculate Conception, on the left bank of the Rhône.
