Smriga et al. investigate heterotrophic denitrification in particulate matrices. Their model shows that Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells and microcolonies metabolically shade each other, allowing denitrification to occur microns away from O2-saturated bulk water, and simulates microscale effects of a bulk system.
