The article discusses different approaches to the definition of «family» and its value as an educational environment; it is submitted the classification of families and family structure, which allows to determine its basic forms and types; it is analyzed the basic functions of the family. The author emphasizes that alongside social and economic changes taking place in society, the family gradually loses its functionality. The crisis of modern culture, conflicts and contradictions negatively affect the process of social adaptation and family break function.
