Las monjas de Buenos Aires en tiempos de la monarquía católica, 1745-1810
Abstract
Buenos Aires city had two nunneries along the colonial period, both founded about 1750. In this work I propose to think over the religious and social universe the nuns built and lived in. In order to do it I will develop issues such as the requisites necessary to get into the religious life, the nuns’ social level, the mechanisms used by them in order to organize both, everyday life and a hierarchical community. At last I try to understand whether the cloister was a hierophany –a manifestation of the sacred–, as the religious women determined themselves to create on entering the convent, or a mirror of the society they lived in.
