Des musées chinois dans Binondo : à la recherche d’un patrimoine perdu ?
Abstract
The creation of two museums promoting the Sino-Philippine identity in Manila’s Chinatown, Binondo, requires an interrogation of their exhibits. The content of these two museums recalls the glorious past of old Manila associated with Chinatown, that is, the period from 1850 to 1950, including the end of the Spanish colonial period and the American presence. However, these museums bear witness to the evolution of a territory. Sino-Filipinos are in the minority in this district and a wave of migration from mainland China is transforming it. The growing influence of mainland China is reflected in the ostentatious visual markings. Thus, different scales of analysis, local and international, can help to understand the creation of these two museums perpetuating the heritage of this Sino-Filipino neighborhood.
