The effect of fine needle aspiration biopsy on thyroid hormone levels
Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) on the thyroid hormones. Methods: Between October and November 2008, USG (ultrasonography) guided FNAB had been performed on 57 patients due to thyroid nodules at Göztepe Education and Research Hospital. Serum thyroid hormone levels were measured just before, just after and half an hour later the biopsy. After that these measurements were compared statistically. Results: The effect of Thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy on serum TG, fT4, TSH, fT3 levels was found statistically significant. Conclusion: FNAB performers should not forget the possible increase of serum thyroid hormone levels after FNAB because of systemic effects of thyroid hormones and the patients should be informed about this possible effect. Since the increase of serum thyroid hormones may cause undesired cardiovascular effects, the patients especially who have cardiac rhythm problems should be monitored for a while after the thyroid biopsy.
