Effect of WeChat Platform combined with Teach-Back health education on functional recovery of patients after modified radical mastectomy

Abstract

Objective To investigate the application efficacy of WeChat Platform combined with Teach-Back mode in shoulder joint recovery after modified radical mastectomy. Methods A total of 148 patients who underwent modified radical mastectomy in our hospital from January to June 2021 were recruited as the conventional group, and another 182 patients who underwent modified radical mastectomy in our hospital from July to December 2021 were included in the improved group. The conventional group received routine health education and functional exercises. The improvement group were given health education based on WeChat Platform and Teach-Back mode to guide patients to perform functional exercise and answer patients' feedback questions through WeChat every day. Constant-Murley shoulder joint function score, quality of life score, anxiety score and depression score were compared between the 2 groups at 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery. Results Constant-Murley shoulder joint function scores were higher in the improved group than the conventional group at 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery. ANOVA for repeated measurements showed that there were statistical differences in the Constant-Murley shoulder joint function score between the 2 groups in time effect (F=1 953.281, P<0.001), intergroup effect (F=368.970, P<0.001) and interaction effect (F=30.104, P<0.001). The improved group also had obviously higher quality of life score (comparison in time points: F=3 793.770, P<0.001; Comparison between groups: F=168.969, P<0.001; Interaction: F=29.468, P<0.001), and lower anxiety (F=530.849, P<0.001; F=10.993, P=0.001; F=4.084, P=0.007) and depression (F=797.101, P<0.001; F=9.453, P=0.002; F=9.364, P<0.001) scores in comparison with the conventional group. Conclusion For the patients underwent modified radical mastectomy, when WeChat Platform combined with Teach-Back mode is used to instruct the exercise of shoulder joint function rehabilitation, it can not only improve the shoulder motion, but also help alleviate the negative emotions and improve the quality of life of patients.
