Based on the revision of research data about the democratic-participatory management of state schools after the Portuguese revolution of 1974, the author presents an interpretation of the democratization process of the governance of schools which took place after 1974, pointing out the main periods, policies, con?icts and contradictions, and discussing some of the more recent impacts of “new managerialism” on Portuguese schools and higher education institutions
