THE ENTROPY OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF THE NOVELS "WE" BY YEVGENY ZAMYATIN AND "THE INVISIBLE MAN" BY HERBERT WELLS
Abstract
Purpose. The presented article is the study of the concept of entropy, being a widely spread notion in the fiction, as based on the texts of the novels We by Yevgeny Zamyatin and The Invisible Man by Herbert Wells. The purpose of the research is to reveal the linguo-stylistic features of transferring the ideas of entropy as well as textual-stylistic connections of science fiction works. Methodology. The basis of the research is the comparative analysis method. The theoretical aspect of the entropy description is taken from Y. Zamyatin’s literary works and the articles by the natural-science scholars. Results. The specificity of the phenomenon “entropy” in the science fiction text is revealed and described according to the formula by H. Reeves, a Canadian astrophysicist. It is the ways of expressing the author’s entropic ideas through metaphorical imagery that are considered in detail. The research of the linguo-stylistic aspect of the presented phenomenon and its reflection in the literary text is carried out relating to the materials of the novels under study. Practical implications. The results of the research can be applied in the complex analysis of science fiction works.
