Comments on a Roman Stamped Brass Ingot
Abstract
A Roman brass ingot, which appeared on the antiquities market, is described in detail. It is stamped three times showing the name most probably of a freedman, Gaius Petronius Hermes. This entrepreneur is otherwise unknown and cannot be linked to other persons with the same praenomen and nomen gentile. Hitherto only a few Roman brass ingots are known, and solely one piece is of similar type which was found at Camulodunum and can be dated to the years before A.D. 60/61. Therefore a similiar dating (1st century A.D.) is suggested for the ingot described here.
