Abstract This Critical Synthesis Package contains: (1) a Critical Analysis of the psychometric properties and the application to health science education of the Cultural Competency Self-Assessment Questionnaire—Service Provider Version (CCSAQ-SP), and (2) a copy of the CCSAQ-SP instrument and the scoring instructions developed by James L. Mason and WA Bellevue via the Research and Training Center on Family Support and Children's Mental Health, and the The National Fathers' Network. The CCSAQ-SP is a self-administered instrument with 79 items, divided into seven validated subscales of: Knowledge of Communities, Personal Involvement, Resources and Linkages, Staffing, Service Delivery and Practices, Organization and Policy Procedures, and Reaching out to Communities. The response options are presented along several different 4-point Likert-type scales from which mean subscale scores and a total scale score can be calculated. Higher scores indicate higher individual cultural competency. Select items from the CCSAQ-SP have demonstrated efficacy among medical students in applicable studies. The original development of the CCSAQ dictates reliability and validity among mental health care and service professionals. Although a meta-analysis of cultural competence instruments concluded that the CCSAQ is a valid and reliable measure compared with others, it is important to note the lack of external peer-reviewed studies confirming these results. While the CCSAQ shows promise in determining cultural competency among service providers, many steps must be taken to ensure that the instrument is reliable across populations. Future external validation studies should be validated with several different populations of service providers in regions of novel underserved populations, including rural populations. Constructs should also be measured longitudinally to determine the test-retest reliability of the measure. Finally, future research should conduct exploratory factor analyses to confirm internal structure, and validate the CCSAQ-SP among novel groups of service providers.
