The recognition of Islam as a public corporation in Austria for over 100 years offers Islamic organizations a special infrastructure for their religious, cultural, economic and political activities. Under the umbrella organization of IGGiÖ as the official representative of Muslim organizations, various ethnic-religious societies and associations have established mosques as well as other institutions, such as schools and kindergartens, mainly for their ethnic-religious groups. In recent years, the integration of these ethnic-religious groups has increasingly become the focus of Austria’s integration policy.Among these societies and associations, ATIB, with its dependence on the Bureau of the Turkish Religious Directorate [Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı], has in recent years been seen as a particular challenge for the settlement of Islamic organizations in Austria. This contribution deals with Diyanet’s political and religious influence on the political and religious affairs of the Turkish population in Austria through the ATIB mosques and the related political consequences.
