The present text guides to the understanding of the reason why Sociology was inserted and remained as a subject in the Brazilian high school curriculum within the preparatory study category, between 1925 and 1942. Also it aims to understand the connection withthe idea of modernity in the country. The sources selected for information was the laws about school legislation and the education programmers of Pedro II College, in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro.
