This is the first of a series of notes on the technical lexicon of Greek astronomy. Between the 5th and 4th centuries BC, in Greece, the study of the sky becomes an autonomous discipline, whose concepts and practices favour the formation of a specific vocabulary. The study of this technical lexicon – both the Greek terminology and its Latin reception – offers a privileged point of view on the development of astronomy. The present note is devoted to the names with which the Greeks designate the study of sky.
