The relationship between phase angle measurements and cardiovascular risk factor in adults: Insights from an epidemiologic cohort study

Summary: Background: This study investigated the practicality of Phase Angle (PhA) as a cellular integrity indicator obtained from bioelectrical impedance and its feasible association with the cardiovascular risk factors among healthy Iranian adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted of 5000 participants. All biologic impedance and laboratory data were obtained at the time of registration according to the study protocol. Framingham's risk score has been calculated for each participant to assess the risk of cardiovascular disease. Simple and Multiple linear regression analyses were used to determine the relationship between PhA and cardiovascular risk score. Results: The mean age of participants was 45.11+9.97 years, 2294(46%) were males and 2706(54%) were females. Triglyceride, total cholesterol, diastolic blood pressure, Waist hip ratio in women, and Fat mass and Waist Circumference in men were not significant association with Phase angle (P> 0.05). In the multivariable linear regression, high levels of TG, FBS, FFM, and elevated age and BMI were associated directly with high cardiovascular risk scores (P < 0.0001) also, the levels of PhA and HDL were associated negatively with Framingham risk score in both genders (P < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: According to the present study results, Increased cardiovascular risk factor was associated with higher BMI, aging, FM, WHR, TC, LDL, TG, and FBS in both genders, also Phase angle measurements could be a good predictor of cardiovascular disease in both gender men and women.
