Abstract

Tamil society has a unique place not only in the history of Tamil Nadu but also in the history of the world. The people with rich culture and heritage know how everything from the festivals celebrated by the Tamil people concerning their beliefs, faiths, rituals and sports has been always filled with in-depth meaning. The sports played during the Sangam Age were not just a time-evading act but rather made the players not only strong and healthy but also made them highly spirited and energetic. Sports are played to keep them aware and alert to face all sorts of crises with a sportive lookout. Sangam Literature is a golden treasure of the ancient Tamil culture and has been a source of influence in the life of the modern Tamil people. They still feel the heritage in them and are proud of their magnificence. The Sangam works deal with many types of life-oriented virtues. Sport is seen as a virtue of the Sangam Tamil people. There are many types of sports played by people and they are true with connotative meanings physically and mentally. Thus, the research aims to illustrate and explain the hidden meanings behind these sports to the present society in a lucid way.
