The article reveals the origins of Chinese Communist cinema and the establishment of State control over it between 1949-1952 for the purpose of political propaganda. The first part presents the prehistory of this cinema which was created at the “Red Base” in the north of China in the late 1930s and developed in the north-east in the 1940s with the expansion of Communist forces in China. The second part examines the establishment of the film administration system after 1949. It indicates the key role played by the PCC (Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference) and the State during the process of industrialisation with the aim of using cinema for propaganda. The third part analyses the new film genres of Communist cinema. The fourth part shows the link between progressive cinema and the Communist authority, analysing the criticism of films produced by private studios. This criticism led to the end of the private studios, which were taken over by the State. The fifth part follows the adoption of Socialist Realism as a guideline for film-making. The fifth part presents the adoption of socialist realism as the guideline of film creation.
