Immigration and continued education within the nursing assemblage in the sanitary environment of Lleida
Abstract
The significant immigration increase in the latest years implies a new challenge for nurses. Aim: To detect the present situation in the nurse education field related to immigrants; their interest to get acquainted with immigrant difficulties and needs. Methodology: A descriptive, transversal study from a representative sample of the whole body of nursing professionals in the Lleida environment was accomplished. For data collection a questionnaire was presented, for the statistical analysis a computer programme SPSS, version 13.0 was used. Outcomes: More than 90% of the nursing professionals in the Lleida area are women 50 years or younger, most of them working in hospital wards. Although some interest towards immigration was shown, only 24% of them had some special education on the matter. Most of them expressed to have communication difficulties with immigrants. Suggestions gathered in the questionnaire set models for integration and education. Conclusions: Nursing education with regard to immigration is very poor. Reasons, first: high costs, and second: working schedules. In general terms, nursing professionals of Primary Health show more interest to cope and are more flexible in punctual cases of adapting protocols and care than their peers in hospital areas.
