In this paper we formulate our first hypotheses and initial line of investigation about the Cieneguilla district in the Late Horizon. We review the geographic, archeological (especially the settlement pattern) and ethnohistoric evidence that are known at present. We also look at our hypotheses in relation to the Ychsma problematic. We try to draw attention principally to the possible presence of different “segments” of what is usually denominated “Ychsma” in the valley, in relation to the different identifiable sections of the valley, that demonstrate the existence of a decentralized (segmentary) polity that was transformed by the incas.
