The present essay examines the Italian political situation during the early 1960’s. It discusses a moment of profound change that culminates in the formation of the 4th Fanfani government, an executive that opened to the socialists parting with the previous tradition of “centrism”, the dominant feature of the Italian political panorama since the 1940’s. The objective of this study is to give an assessment of this governmental experience led by the statesman from Arezzo, and highlight the successes and failures of an executive that was subject to attentive eyes from both the “right” and “left” contrary to the union between Christian Democrats and Socialists.
