By applying a reflexive and experiential analysis, our paper questions the relationship between researchers and practitioners, specifically their developing interactions while carrying out collaborative research on the working practices of implementing institutional pedagogy on a national public school scale. The hypothesis is that collaborative research can become fertile ground for mimetic rivalry, which encourages the development of scapegoating. A corollary to this hypothesis is that the taboos linked to research and to the life of the group feed the scapegoating mechanism. The paper follows the scapegoating process, its development and phases, outlines group taboos and the character of the scapegoat. It concludes with the need to move from rivalry to complementarity.
