An advanced mathematical model for temperature distributions in semi-infinite and finite thickness targets using different heating mechanisms induced by a pulsed laser is developed. To overcome the violated boundary conditions occurring at certain absorption mechanism, virtual sources are considered. Solutions of the heat transfer equation for different combinations of target thicknesses and different absorption mechanisms are presented. Through limiting conditions applied on the temperature distribution developed for certain absorption mechanism and thickness target, the results for all other combinations can be obtained. By this means it is not necessary to solve the heat transfer equation from the very beginning. Computations of the derived temperature distributions are carried out on aluminum target. The differences in the computed spatial and temporal distributions are discussed and the appearing discrepancies are explained.
