The Provence-Alpes-Côte d´Azur region contains two major cities, Marseille and Nice, linked by their origin since the second was founded by the former. However, the archaeology of these cities did not followed the same development. In Marseille, the excavations of La Bourse led to the emergence of rescue archeology at the end of the 1960s. There followed, gradually, an archaeological awareness which has not stopped since. The territory of Nice presented important remains of the Roman city of Cemenelum, but with the exception of a few excavations of little importance, almost anything of the former Massaliote colony or of the medieval city was known before the beginning of the 21st century. In a decade, the creation of a great service has enabled the Nice metropolis to catch up.
