Various approaches to the use of green roofs and green facades in Seoul, South Korea, are considered and illustrated by typical and unique examples of the use of planting on building roofs and facades. It is shown that the widespread use of green roofs and green facades in Korea is associated with a number of factors, among which are the climatic features of Seoul with a rainy season and a long hot and humid summer; systematic and substantial support from the municipality of the city for roof gardening and greening projects; and promoting an active lifestyle, community activities and "urban farming" among the citizens. The practical, ecological, aesthetic and social functions of green roofs and facades are noted. The complex effect of green roofs and facades is considered as a combination of environmental, aesthetic, psychological and economic components, depending significantly on building type, and climatic factors. In Russia, the introduction of green roofs and facades is a topical issues actively discussed from various perspectives. However, we cannot directly borrow foreign experiences due to climatic differences. It is important to study in detail the climatic features and contexts in Russia as a prerequisite to considering the possibilities of using green roofs and facades.
