The article describes the first stage in one of the most important military operations — Lviv-Sandomierz. Its success allowed Soviet troops to enter western part of Ukraine. The authors analyze offensive actions First Ukrainian Front troops, that broke German army’s defense down. The Lviv-Sandomierz operation had two stages, aimed at breakthrough of the German defense and setting the ground for the First Ukrainian Front to continue the offensive westwards. During this offensive operation, Soviet troops liberated a number of Ukrainian cities, caused considerable damage to the German army and captured many trophies: tanks, cannons, aircraft, weapons and military equipment.
