Surgical results in the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma in Villa Clara
Abstract
A descriptive study was carried out due to the need to give answers to several questions which constituted our main objectives. As general objective we analyzed the evolution of the elderly patients treated in our province with a diagnosis of chronic subdural hematoma; and as specific objectives we identified the clinical manifestations presented, determined the complications that appeared and interpreted the existing relation between complications, tomographic findings, the stay in hospital and the evolution. In order to achieve this, 117 medical histories of patients suffering from this illness were checked – the elderly patients were taken as a sample. Then the necessary variables were tabulated and the Anton-Alvarez scale was used to know the final results. The results showed a prevalence of unilateral hematomas over the bilateral ones; that the headache was the predominant clinical manifestation, as well as the respiratory sepsis in the complications; and it was concluded that in general the patients evolve satisfactorily.
