Technical note: Preparation and purification of atmospherically relevant <i>α</i>-hydroxynitrate esters of monoterpenes

Abstract

Organic nitrate esters are key products of terpene oxidation in the atmosphere. We report here the preparation and purification of nine nitrate esters derived from (+)-3-carene, limonene, α-pinene, β-pinene and perillic alcohol. The availability of these compounds will enable detailed investigations into the structure–reactivity relationships of aerosol formation and processing and will allow individual investigations into aqueous-phase reactions of organic nitrate esters.
