Fan, Hou et al. investigate the role of phosphodiesterase (PDE) 4 and the PDE4-cAMP-PKA pathway on hypertension, reporting that PDE4D is upregulated in hypertension induced by angiotensin II. The authors also show that Pde4d knockout in mouse SMCs attenuates Ang II-induced hypertension and implicate AMPK signalling and MYPT1-MLC phosphorylation in Ang II-induced SMC contraction.
