Maltusianismo y control social en la distopía hollywoodiense de finales del siglo xx. Malthusianism and social control in the Hollywood dystopia in the late 20th century.
Abstract
El maltusianismo decimonónico, y su desarrollo gracias al neomaltusianismo de finales del siglo xix, atendían a las consecuencias que la sobrepoblación, derivada del desequilibrio entre los medios de subsistencia y la población, podría tener en una sociedad. Esta ideología científico-social conservadora fue revitalizada a finales del siglo xx de manera que, al igual que en la centuria anterior, la cultura popular de masas reflejó este ideario en sus narrativas. De esta forma, Wedlock, Fortress, Judge Dredd e, incluso, Total Recall y Johnny Mnemonic destacan entre los relatos distópicos hollywoodienses que, en un contexto conservador y en crisis del que son incapaces de desinhibirse, difunden y perpetúan el control social maltusiano en sus especulaciones negativas de sociedades futuras. Estos, en su calidad de registros del pasado, pueden ser analizados desde una perspectiva de análisis neohistoricista, al realizar una interpretación de la sociedad a la que pertenecen creando otra, de manera que el contexto real forma parte de la ficción. Nineteenth-century Malthusianism, and its development thanks to neo-Malthusianism of the late nineteenth century, addressed the consequences that overpopulation, derived from the imbalance between means of subsistence and population, could have in a society. This conservative social-scientific ideology was revitalized at the end of the 20th century so that, as in the previous century, popular mass culture reflected this ideology in its narratives. In this way, Wedlock, Fortress, Judge Dredd and even Total Recall and Johnny Mnemonicstand out among the dystopian Hollywood narratives that, in a conservative context and in crisis from which they are unable to disinhibit, spread and perpetuate Malthusian social control in their negative speculations of future societies. These narratives, considered as records of the past, can be analyzed from a new historicist analysis perspective, by making an interpretation of the society to which they belong and creating another, so that the real context is part of the fiction itself.
