Functionalized nanoparticles loaded nanocomposites have triggered much greater attention in scientific literature as these provide versatile property improvements, even at low particulate concentration, resulting in high level performance in energy applications. These performances are based on several parameters, but nanoparticle dispersion and distribution are the key challenges to achieve the full exploitation of nanocomposites in many energy application areas. This review focuses on in-depth applications of such nanocomposites in areas of solar cells and water-splitting. This review also covers different strategies for improving their properties with unique applications. In many applications such as environmental remediation, energy (solar cell and water splitting), and sensing, polymeric nanocomposites has also been studied extensively. Detailed research activities were conducted to resolve problems in energy and the environment. The focus of this review is on the synthesis and applications of polymer-based nanocomposites in the energy field.
