The Upper Lozva River and Its Adjacent Territories Toponymy on the Handwritten Map by Antal Reguly (Karte NRO I. 1844)

Abstract

In the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Archives, there are five numbered plans of maps made by Antal Reguly during his trip to the Northern-Ural Mountains in 1844-1845. Based on the above-mentioned manuscripts, Reguly drew the first detailed map of the Northern-Ural Region in Saint Petersburg in 1846. The first plan of the map (Karte Nro I. 1844) presents the Upper-Lozva River, where he began collecting linguistic materials from the Mansi people of the Region, containing 176 toponyms not only from the Upper-Lozva River but from the Upper-Sosva, Southern-Sosva, Upper-Pelim, Upper-Vishera regions as well as from the western part of the Northern-Ural Mountains. The author lists and analyzes the toponyms from the plan in question considered the first comprehensive source of toponymy of the Region, all the 176 units being analyzed etymologically and compared with the materials collected and etymologized by A. K. Matveyev. In addition to the 69 previously known etymologies, the author offers about 100 new etymological interpretations based on the materials of the manuscript.
