Referring to a current research project on cooperation between youth welfare services and psychiatry in Eastern and Western Germany, this article takes up the discourse of social work as working along and sometimes across borders and discusses first research findings in this context. Thus diverse modes of boundary-practises can be identified, while specific historical backgrounds of the addressed institutions provide information on ‘social productivity’ in an East-West-perspective.
