The activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, the content of reduced glutathione and products of lipid peroxidation in liver tissue of rats with alloxan-indused diabetes were investigated. Magnesium citrate in doses 100, 250, and 500 mg Mg2+/kg body weight was added to the animal diet. It was established that the content of the products of lipid peroxidation and the reduced glutathione, the activity of catalase increased, while the activity of glutathione peroxidase decreased in the liver of rats with experimental diabetes. It was found that the magnesium citrate addition to the diet of animals with experimental diabetes allows to stabilize prooxidative/antioxidative status in rats’ liver. The stabilization was accompanied by an increase in activity of the glutathione peroxidase and decrease in catalase activity. The content of reduced glutathione and products of lipid peroxidation approaches to normal level.
